Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Judy Garland Wizard of OzThe Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American fantasy adventure film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.

Growing up in Small Town, WI, USA back in the 1960’s I watched a movie called “Wizard Of Oz”.

I could relate to Dorothy and her dream of being “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I sang the song many times while riding my 2-wheel Schwinn bike around our neighborhood block and through the beet fields of the local cannery. All the time talking with my imaginary friend “JULY”. Odd name, I know. We were the best of friends, sharing everything. Even our dreams of happier times once Over the Rainbow. JULY had dreams too. That we would always be together, best of friends, forever and ever.

I don’t remember when JULY and I met. But he/she took me by the hand and helped me through a very difficult period in my life. Our favorite song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". We talked about what it must be like there. We thought that maybe that’s where other children of incest were. They would be playing, laughing, running, jumping, singing and so very happy. Of course, there wouldn’t be any grown-ups there. Just children with their best-friends, their imaginary friends.

At the end of, “Wizard Of Oz”, Dorothy & Toto return home in Kansas. And she says, “There’s no place like home”. I never really liked that phrase. I don’t remember being very happy at home. Yes, I guess at some point, we all have to grow up and stop running from our pain and face the truth. I think that is what Dorothy finally was doing. JULY was my “Wizard Of Oz”. He/she could take my pain away. He/she always held my hand with his/her face beaming with a loving smile. We would play & dance. Our secret we shared couldn’t touch us. I would cry and JULY would wipe the tears and say “It’s alright. I’m here. Let’s go play.”

As I’m re-visiting my childhood by writing this blog, I’m re-discovering my dear friend, JULY, and the Rainbows we shared. Rainbows appear during and after a storm. Beautifully colored roads leading to a happier time or place. So I share with you, the words JULY and I would sing. My hope is that all the sexually abused children everywhere will some day find their Rainbow too.

rainbow children playing

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

rainbow robin

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a classic
Academy Award-winning ballad song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg.[1] It was written for the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale.[1]

Open your eyes, as well as open your mouths.  Incest is a silent destroyer of everything good and beautiful in life.  Our children.
